Water boards are getting certified for the CO2 Performance Ladder

On Wednesday, April 10, the kick-off of the Community of Practice CO2 Performance Ladder for Water Boards was given. No fewer than seven water boards will start using the CO2 Performance Ladder. These frontrunners are in a select, but fast-growing group: the Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management, the province of Gelderland and the municipalities of Barneveld and Renkum already have a CO2 Performance Ladder certificate.

Under the supervision of the Dutch Water Autorities and SKAO, Wetterskip Fryslân, Delfland, Limburg, Vallei and Veluwe, Noorderzijlvest, Vechtstroom and Hollands Noorderkwartier will start working on the CO2 Performance Ladder. The aim of the Community of Practice is to develop knowledge and exchange about structural monitoring of CO2 emissions control. The 7 water boards will be investigating together next year what the benefits of a CO2 Performance Ladder certificate are and what additional requirements are required to obtain a certificate.

By obtaining a CO2 Performance Ladder certificate, a government sets a good example. Certification on the CO2 Performance Ladder appears to be very effective in practice: the certificate holder has a successfully implemented climate plan aimed at CO2 reduction. The ambition and progress is tested annually by a certifying institution. The brochure CO2 Performance Ladder for Governments lists all the benefits for governments.

Certification reinforces the credibility of the (local) government that takes the lead in the energy transition. With certification they will soon meet the same requirements as the companies that carry out projects on behalf of the water boards.
